Q10140 - FAQ: My Windows Vista computer is not getting backed up when scheduled.

Windows Vista computers may not get backed up if the computer is sleeping at the time the backup is scheduled.

By default the Microsoft Windows Vista operating systems go into sleep mode after one hour of inactivity.  If your backup job is scheduled to run after hours, it is likely that your computer has automatically shutdown before the backup is scheduled to run.  Rhinoback will automatically send you an email notifying you that the computer missed it's scheduled backup.

Solution 1:

Turn off the automatic sleep feature in Windows Vista.  The power options can be found in the Vista control panel under power managment.  The predefined power mode "High Performance" keeps the computer awake at all times.  The other predefined modes put the computer to sleep after one hour of inactivity.

Solution 2:

Schedule Rhinoback to run at a time when the computer will not be sleeping, such as near the end of the work day.  Most Rhinoback backup jobs run very quickly because only changed files are actually copied to the offsite backup facilities.  To set the Rhinoback backup schedules; open the Rhinoback Manager software that is installed on your computer, Select the backup set, and select Backup Schedule, then select your backup schedule and click Properties.

Solution 3:

Remove the backup schedules from your Rhinoback settings for your backup set on your computer, and use the Rhinoback Off-line Backup feature.  Rhinoback's Off-line Backup feature allows you to specify an interval such as daily and then Rhinoback will automatically backup your computer when it is online if has been more than one day since it was last backed up.

To setup the Rhinoback Off-line backup feature; open the Rhinoback Manager software that is installed on your computer, and then select your backup set.  Select Extra Backup.  Select the option to Enable off-line backup.  You can specify an interval and also set how often you would like to be notified via email if a backup is not performed. See the related articles below for more information on the Rhinoback Off-line Backup feature.

To remove the backup schedules; open the Rhinonback Manager software that is installed on your computer, and then select your backup set, and select Backup Schedule.  You can then remove your backup schedules.
